The survey additionally discovered that 40% of the artists surveyed mentioned they cannot afford to contribute to a pension scheme or save any cash.

Notably, the surveyed artists’ skilled apply represented simply 33% of their total earnings, with many having to depend on extra methods to usher in cash. Simply 12% of surveyed artists mentioned that their apply represented their sole technique of earnings.

“The monetary, sensible and mental challenges artists face imply that they need to continuously discover options—and, more and more, justification—for a lifestyle which can appear to run counter to the remainder of society,” Panton mentioned.

Acme, which has supplied studio area for artists like Grayson Perry and Hew Locke over its 50-year existence, will launch the total Artist Tenant Survey report on 13 July.

Acme spoke to 226 of the 850 artist tenants who lease studio area from the charity. The Acme Artist Tenant Survey was carried out between November 2021 and April 2022.
