Environmental activists attacked a portray by Claude Monet with purple paint and glue on the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm yesterday. The portray, Le jardin de l’artiste à Giverny (1900), is unhurt and the activists have been arrested, the museum mentioned in a press release.

The portray was on mortgage from the Musée d’Orsay for an exhibition on the Nationalmuseum referred to as The Backyard – Six Centuries of Artwork and Nature. “In dialogue with the lender, we’re now trying into the chances of reinstalling the paintings within the exhibition,” mentioned Hanna Tottmar, head of press on the museum.

“We distance ourselves from actions the place artwork or cultural heritage are put vulnerable to injury,” says Per Hedström, the appearing director normal on the Nationalmuseum. “Cultural heritage has nice symbolic worth and it’s unacceptable to assault or destroy it, for any function in any way.”

A bunch referred to as Aterstall Vatmarker (Restore Wetlands) disseminated a video of the incident through Twitter, displaying two ladies smearing purple paint on the protecting glass overlaying the portray with one hand, whereas gluing the opposite to the glass. In accordance with the Nationalmuseum, the incident occurred yesterday at 2.30 p.m.

The assault is the most recent in a sequence of comparable artwork stunts by local weather activists, who’ve flung or smeared substances together with tomato soup, mashed potatoes, paint, glue, cake and a black oily liquid at work by artists together with Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Vermeer and Gustav Klimt.
