The London seller Alison Jacques is transferring into a brand new 6,000 sq ft headquarters on Cork Road this autumn after 16 years on Berner Road, within the close by West Finish. “I simply felt it was time to step up—we’d like more room for our artists and it’s clear that Mayfair is the centre [for galleries],” she says. Jacques will keep her Berner Area for now, although future plans are “not clear”.

Based on the seller, Cork Road has all the time been the epitome of the London artwork market. As she places it: “It’s filled with nostalgia; I had a romantic dream of opening reverse [Leslie] Waddington.” Jacques credit the late seller, who in 1966 started his gallery that ultimately grew to become Waddington Custot, with kickstarting her profession as a gallerist; it was in her earlier job as a journalist, whereas Jacques was interviewing Waddington, that he provided her a job in his gallery. Different pioneering sellers who had areas on Cork Road—to whom Jacques pays her dues—embody Victoria Miro, John Kasmin, James Mayor and Bernard Jacobson.

Cork Road, which has been managed by the Pollen Property since 2016, has swollen and contracted through the years. Jacques will now be part of Goodman Gallery and Stephen Friedman, which opens a big new area previously occupied by Saatchi Yates this autumn. Frieze Artwork Truthful has a gallery hub at quantity 9.

The brand new three-storey area, at quantity 22 (a part of which was beforehand inhabited by Lisson Gallery on a short lived contract), is being refurbished by the architect Mike Rundell. “There are only a few areas in central Mayfair you can basically utterly rebuild and make it as you need,” Jacques says. The brand new venue contains one gallery with a five-metre-tall ceiling, “which supplies an unimaginable clean canvas”, she provides.

The primary present shall be of recent work by the textile artist Sheila Hicks, who’s 88, adopted by an exhibition of the late American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Jacques says the gallery will proceed its work “discovering or rediscovering artists who haven’t had their dues, significantly ladies artists”. Latest additions to the gallery programme embody Hastings-based artist Sophie Barber, the Macedonian/Serbian artist Ljiljana Blazevska, Jane Dickson (who Jacques picked up after she was included within the 2022 Whitney Biennial) and the Turner Prize-winning artist Veronica Ryan.

In addition to specializing in mid-career artists and estates, Jacques says she plans to tackle “a youthful era of artists—those that we need to nurture and construct their careers”.

Opening a big area in Mayfair is definitely a press release of intent, and Jacques believes London will stay an important centre for the worldwide artwork market. So, are the consequences of Brexit diminishing?

“Brexit hasn’t been a problem for us,” Jacques says. “For us, importing works to the UK has turn out to be simpler. Earlier than, a consumer importing works by, say, Maria Bartuszová, whose property relies in Slovakia, or Sheila Hicks in Paris would have needed to pay 20% VAT and now they solely pay 5%. That could be a important distinction if you find yourself speaking about works price a whole lot of 1000’s of kilos. It’s cultivated a stronger UK primarily based shopping for.”
