Tehran-based Dastan Gallery is flying the flag for Iranian girls artists at Frieze, with a well timed choice of works by 5 established figures within the wake of the “Lady, Life, Freedom” protests throughout Iran and worldwide. The artists featured are Behjat Sadr (1924-2009) and Farideh Lashai (1944-2013), together with Farah Ossouli, Bita Fayyazi and Newsha Tavakolian; costs vary from round $15,000 to $200,000.

Tavakolian’s six-screen video set up Hear (2010) highlights the restrictions on girls singers in Iran. “For me a girl’s voice represents an influence that if you happen to silence it, imbalances society and makes every thing deformed,” Tavakolian says. “I let Iranian girls singers carry out by my digital camera whereas the world has by no means heard them.”

Ossouli’s gouache on cardboard, David and I (2014), factors to girls as brokers of change in patriarchal societies. The work seems to French painter Jacques-Louis David’s The Intervention of the Sabine Ladies (1799), which reveals the ladies intervening to cease a battle between the Romans who had kidnapped and married the ladies, and the Sabine males decided to reclaim them.

This piece by David could be linked to the scenario in Iran following the rise of the civil rights Inexperienced motion in 2009, Ossouli says. “We now have been witnessing the efforts of girls as mediators for bringing peace in pre- and post-revolution Iran,” she tells The Artwork Newspaper.

Turmoil was unleashed in Iran following the demise of Mahsa Amini final September. Amini died in an Iranian hospital after being detained by the regime’s morality police for allegedly not complying with the nation’s hijab laws. Her demise sparked ongoing mass protests in cities throughout Iran in addition to demonstrations throughout the globe.

“There was a will in these [five] artists to specific themselves in opposition to limitations inside a patriarchal society and a fancy equipment of energy whose train of social management hinges on girls’s our bodies,” says Dastan in an announcement. “Their apply is a seamless braiding of private historical past and politics, lived by bone and blood, arriving at their distinctive language.”

Sadr is represented within the present by the portray Untitled (2009), the place the “layer of oil is skinny sufficient for the white below to shine by, but heavy [enough] to make it crumble”, provides the gallery assertion.

Fayyazi’s yarn and ceramics piece Heavenly Creatures (2022-23) reveals an unmoored plant that seems to be rising organically, whereas Lashei’s Untitled from The Timber sequence (2008) completes the choice. The late Italian critic Germano Celant wrote in 2015 that Lashei is “a girl who has handed by and suffered troubled instances in Iran, reflecting them in her works, from work to poetry”.

The unbiased curator and guide Dina Nasser-Khadivi, who based the collective behind the #PostItForwardWLF marketing campaign, says: “Dastan has aligned its programme in a really sensible manner with the scenario [in Iran] and its evolution. All through the years, they’ve been an amazing platform for key voices in addition to for rising artists in Iran. What they’re exhibiting in New York could be very on level.”
