Greenpeace’s Bitcoin Art Piece Praised by Supporters

In March 2021, Greenpeace partnered with artwork activist Benjamin Von Wong for its “change the code, not the local weather” marketing campaign to transform Bitcoin’s consensus mechanism to a proof-of-stake (PoS) mannequin. The marketing campaign goals to strain Bitcoin builders, miners, and the federal government to maneuver Bitcoin from proof-of-work to PoS to cut back the environmental affect of Bitcoin mining.

As a part of the marketing campaign, Greenpeace commissioned an artwork piece known as the “Cranium of Satoshi,” an 11-feet-tall cranium product of recycled digital waste that includes the Bitcoin brand and pink laser eyes. The smoking stacks on high of the cranium characterize the fossil gasoline and coal air pollution brought on by Bitcoin mining.

Unexpectedly, the artwork piece was extensively praised by Bitcoin supporters, with some even adopting it as a quasi-mascot. Will Foxley, the media technique director at crypto miner Compass Mining, known as the artwork piece “badass” and adjusted his Twitter profile image to a picture of the Cranium of Satoshi. Coin Metrics co-founder Nic Carter tweeted that the artwork is the “most steel Bitcoin paintings thus far.”

Nonetheless, some Twitter customers criticized the imagery chosen by Greenpeace, with one consumer saying that the smokestacks on the cranium’s head resembled nuclear cooling towers emitting steam.

Greenpeace’s “change the code, not the local weather” marketing campaign was launched round a yr in the past alongside different local weather teams and Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen. The marketing campaign claims that 30 “key” entities may transfer Bitcoin from proof-of-work to PoS in the event that they agreed to the change.

Bitcoin mining has confronted criticism for its excessive power consumption and carbon footprint. Presently, Bitcoin makes use of a proof-of-work consensus mechanism that requires an unlimited quantity of computational energy and power to validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. Proof-of-stake, alternatively, requires far much less power consumption and has a decrease carbon footprint.
